% change = (final − initial) ÷ initial × 100 = (3.4 − 4.0) ÷ 4.0 × 100 = −15%. The minus sign matters — it tells you water moved out, so the solution was more concentrated than the cells.
Exam advice
- Underline the command word ('describe', 'explain', 'compare', 'evaluate') and stick to it.
- For a 6-mark question, aim for 6 clearly separated points — bullets are fine if clearly written.
- Use the correct vocabulary even in the first sentence ('osmosis', 'mitosis', 'antibody') — examiners reward subject-specific language.
- Always quote data from the table or graph when asked to 'use the data'.
