GCSE Physics: Electricity

Electricity is the most equation-heavy topic in GCSE Physics. The good news is you only need around eight equations to handle the entire topic; the challenge is choosing the right one for the question.

Current (I, amps), potential difference (V, volts) and resistance (R, ohms) are linked by V = IR. Ammeters measure current and go in series; voltmeters measure pd and go in parallel. Series circuits share the current and split the pd; parallel circuits share the pd and split the current.

I-V graphs (current-voltage characteristics) for an ohmic resistor (straight line through origin), a filament lamp (S-shaped curve — resistance increases as it heats up) and a diode (current only flows one way) are a guaranteed question. You should be able to sketch each and explain its shape.

Power equations: P = IV, P = I²R, P = V²/R. Choose the one with the quantities you have. Energy transferred E = Pt, also E = QV (where Q = It is charge in coulombs).

Mains electricity is examined on the live (brown), neutral (blue), earth (green/yellow) wires, the role of the fuse and circuit breaker, the difference between AC and DC, and the UK mains values (230 V, 50 Hz). Higher-tier students also need transformer equations.

The National Grid uses step-up transformers to reduce energy loss in transmission (low current → low I²R losses) and step-down transformers for domestic supply. Examiners reward students who give the reason in terms of current and I²R losses, not just 'reduces energy loss'.
