IGCSE Biology Revision
Master IGCSE Biology with AI tools built around the real specification — concise notes, adaptive flashcards and exam-style practice marked against published mark-scheme conventions.
IGCSE Biology is a high-volume, high-stakes subject — characteristics and classification of organisms, organisation, transport and nutrition, coordination, response and reproduction, inheritance, variation and ecology — and the gap between a strong grade and a top grade is rarely about how many hours you put in. It is about whether those hours target the spec points, command words and exam techniques that actually move marks on IGCSE papers.
OES gives you concise spec-aligned notes for every Biology sub-topic, adaptive flashcards that prioritise what you keep forgetting, and AI-generated exam-style questions marked against the published IGCSE mark-scheme conventions. You always know what you are revising, why it is on the paper, and where you are losing marks.
IGCSE Biology students typically lose marks for the same handful of reasons: vague definitions, missed application or evaluation marks, weak use of subject-specific vocabulary, and rushed answers to higher-tariff questions. Our AI feedback looks at your responses the way an examiner would — command word by command word — so feedback is something you can actually act on, not a grade with no explanation.
OES does not provide official copyrighted past papers. Instead, our AI generates fresh Biology exam-style practice papers and revision resources that mirror the structure, difficulty and command words of real Cambridge (CAIE) and Edexcel International exams. That gives you unlimited practice without the legal grey area.
What you'll learn
- The full topic map of IGCSE Biology: Characteristics and classification of organisms; Organisation, transport and nutrition; Coordination, response and reproduction; Inheritance, variation and ecology
- How examiners reward IGCSE Biology command words like "describe", "explain" and "evaluate"
- Which Biology sub-topics carry the most marks across recent IGCSE papers
- How to use notes, flashcards and exam-style questions together for Biology
- How the AI Study Coach plans your IGCSE Biology revision week by week
Who this is for
- Students sitting IGCSE Biology with Cambridge (CAIE) and Edexcel International
- Anyone retaking IGCSE Biology who wants targeted, focused revision
- Tutors and parents supporting IGCSE Biology students
Learning objectives
By the end of this topic you should be able to:
- Map the full IGCSE Biology specification and how the topics fit together
- Apply core Biology concepts across characteristics and classification of organisms and organisation, transport and nutrition
- Use IGCSE command words ("describe", "explain", "evaluate", "compare") correctly in extended responses
- Plan and structure higher-tariff Biology questions to maximise application and evaluation marks
- Self-mark your Biology answers against published mark-scheme conventions and identify where you lost marks
- Build a revision schedule that prioritises your weakest Biology sub-topics in the final weeks before your exams
Common mistakes
- Revising Biology by reading textbooks passively instead of active recall and exam-style practice
- Memorising content without practising the IGCSE command words examiners actually use
- Spending time on areas you already know well, while neglecting your two or three weakest sub-topics
- Writing long, unfocused extended answers that miss the specific mark points on the scheme
- Leaving exam-style timed practice until the final two weeks instead of building it in from the start
Revision tips
- Build a one-page Biology topic map covering characteristics and classification of organisms, organisation, transport and nutrition, coordination, response and reproduction, inheritance, variation and ecology — tick off sub-topics as you revise them
- Drill Biology flashcards in short, daily blocks — spaced repetition beats one long weekly session
- For every Biology topic, attempt at least one exam-style question and self-mark against the mark scheme
- Target your two weakest sub-topics each week, then let the AI Study Coach update the plan as you improve
- In the final 4–6 weeks, switch to full IGCSE-style papers under timed conditions
Key concepts
- Diffusion
- Net movement of particles from a region of higher to lower concentration, down a concentration gradient — passive.
- Osmosis
- Net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a more dilute to a more concentrated solution.
- Active transport
- Movement of particles against a concentration gradient, requiring energy from respiration.
- Mitosis
- Cell division producing two genetically identical daughter cells; used for growth, repair and asexual reproduction.
- Meiosis
- Cell division producing four genetically different haploid gametes; halves chromosome number.
- Enzyme
- A biological catalyst (protein) that speeds up a specific reaction by lowering activation energy.
Worked examples
Question
Explain why a red blood cell placed in distilled water bursts (3 marks).
Solution
Distilled water has a higher water potential than the cytoplasm of the red blood cell (1). Water moves into the cell by osmosis down the water potential gradient (1). The cell has no cell wall so it cannot resist the pressure and lyses/bursts (1). The verb 'osmosis' is essential — 'water goes in' alone scores 0.
Practice questions
Try each one before opening the model answer.
State two ways to increase the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction.
Increase temperature (up to the optimum); increase substrate concentration (until enzymes are saturated).
Describe how a vaccine produces immunity (3 marks).
A small amount of dead/weakened pathogen is introduced (1). Lymphocytes produce specific antibodies and memory cells (1). On re-infection, memory cells produce antibodies faster and in greater quantity (1).
Why is the alveolus adapted for efficient gas exchange?
Large surface area; thin (one cell thick) walls; good blood supply maintaining a steep concentration gradient; moist surface for gases to dissolve.
Define homeostasis.
The regulation of internal conditions to maintain a stable environment in response to internal and external change.

Frequently asked questions
Does OES provide official IGCSE past papers?
No. OES does not redistribute official copyrighted past papers. Our AI generates fresh, IGCSE-style practice papers and revision resources that mirror the structure, command words and difficulty of real Cambridge (CAIE) and Edexcel International exams.
Is the Biology content aligned to the current IGCSE specification?
Yes. Biology notes, flashcards and exam-style questions on OES are mapped to the current IGCSE specification across Cambridge (CAIE) and Edexcel International, so you are only revising what is actually on the paper.
How does the AI mark my IGCSE Biology answers?
Our AI marks your answers against published mark-scheme conventions, command word by command word. It tells you which mark points you hit, which you missed, and how to rephrase weak answers to pick up the extra marks.
Is OES useful for top-grade IGCSE students, or only for catching up?
Both. Strong IGCSE students use OES to drill the highest-tariff questions and refine technique on extended responses. Students who are behind use it to rebuild gaps quickly with focused notes and adaptive flashcards.
How is OES different from a generic AI chatbot for IGCSE revision?
OES is built specifically for Cambridge (CAIE) and Edexcel International exam revision. Content is spec-aligned, marking is mark-scheme aware, and the personal AI Study Coach is trained on real exam-board conventions — not just general knowledge.
How should I structure my IGCSE Biology revision week to week?
Start by mapping your weakest Biology sub-topics, then alternate notes, flashcards and exam-style questions across the week. The AI Study Coach can build a weekly plan and adjust it as you improve. In the final 4–6 weeks, switch to full IGCSE-style timed papers.
Do I need to pay to use OES for IGCSE?
OES has free tools to get started. Paid plans unlock unlimited IGCSE-style exam papers, deeper AI feedback and the full Personal AI Study Coach experience.
