GCSE Chemistry: Chemical Analysis

Chemical Analysis is a small but high-mark topic on paper 2. Most questions are template-based: examiners want the test, the observation and the conclusion in exactly that order.

Pure substances melt and boil at a fixed temperature; mixtures melt and boil over a range. Formulations are mixtures designed for a specific purpose (e.g. paint, fuel, cleaning products). Examiners ask you to identify whether a substance is pure or a formulation from data.

Paper chromatography separates substances by solubility in a solvent. Rf = distance travelled by substance / distance travelled by solvent. You should be able to interpret a chromatogram, identify whether a substance is pure and compare an unknown to a set of standards. Always draw the start line in pencil (not ink).

Tests for gases come up almost every paper. Hydrogen: lit splint → squeaky pop. Oxygen: glowing splint → relights. Carbon dioxide: limewater → cloudy. Chlorine: damp blue litmus paper → bleached white.

Cation tests (flame tests for lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, copper; sodium hydroxide tests for copper, iron(II), iron(III), aluminium, magnesium, calcium) and anion tests (carbonate with dilute acid → CO₂; sulfate with barium chloride → white precipitate; halides with silver nitrate → coloured precipitates) reward systematic memorisation.

Triple students need instrumental methods, especially flame emission spectroscopy. The advantages of instrumental methods over chemical tests — sensitive, rapid, accurate, work on tiny samples — come up as a comparison question.
