GCSE Chemistry: Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry is a content-heavy topic but the reactions follow a small number of patterns. Once you know fractional distillation, alkane/alkene properties and the alcohol homologous series, most questions become predictable.

Crude oil and fractional distillation are guaranteed marks. Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons separated by fractional distillation in a column with a temperature gradient: shorter chains rise higher and condense at lower temperatures. You should know the names and uses of the main fractions (gases, petrol, kerosene, diesel, fuel oil, bitumen).

Alkanes (CₙH₂ₙ₊₂) are saturated hydrocarbons. You should know the first four (methane, ethane, propane, butane) by name and formula, and the trend in viscosity, boiling point, flammability and ease of ignition with chain length. Complete combustion produces CO₂ + H₂O; incomplete combustion produces CO and soot (carbon).

Alkenes (CₙH₂ₙ) are unsaturated hydrocarbons with a C=C double bond. The test is bromine water (orange → colourless). Cracking produces shorter, more useful alkanes and alkenes from long-chain hydrocarbons and is examined as a balanced equation and an explanation of why it is economically valuable.

Alcohols (ending in -ol) and carboxylic acids (-anoic acid) are higher-tier homologous series. Reactions of alcohols (with sodium, with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water, with carboxylic acids to form esters) and the use of alcohols as fuels and solvents come up regularly.
