GCSE Biology: Ecology

Ecology brings GCSE Biology back to whole ecosystems. It is content-heavy but mark-friendly — calculations, graph reading and required-practical descriptions make it a great topic for picking up marks fast.

You need to know the levels of organisation in an ecosystem (individual, population, community, ecosystem) and the meaning of habitat, biotic and abiotic factors. Common abiotic factors (light, temperature, water, soil pH, CO₂, O₂) and biotic factors (competition, predation, disease, new species) come up directly in 4-mark questions.

Sampling with quadrats and transects is the required practical and appears almost every year. You should know how to calculate mean number of organisms per m², estimate total population in a field, and use a transect to investigate distribution along a gradient (e.g. light vs. distance from a tree).

Predator-prey cycles are a classic graph question. The prey peak comes first, the predator peak follows — both populations oscillate but neither goes to zero in a stable ecosystem. Triple students also need the mathematical detail of pyramid of biomass and energy transfer (10% efficiency).

The water cycle, carbon cycle and (triple) nitrogen cycle should be revised as labelled diagrams. Decomposition by microorganisms, the role of bacteria in returning nutrients to soil, and the effect of temperature, moisture and oxygen on rate of decay are common stems.

Human impact — global warming, deforestation, peat bog destruction, biodiversity loss — is a guaranteed 6-mark essay. Examiners want clear cause-effect chains: 'burning fossil fuels releases CO₂ → CO₂ traps infrared radiation → temperature rises → ice melts → habitat loss'.
