GCSE Maths: Algebra
Algebra runs through every GCSE Maths paper. Almost every other topic — graphs, geometry, ratio, statistics — eventually reduces to forming and solving an equation, which is why algebra fluency is the single biggest predictor of a grade jump.
Foundation algebra covers solving linear equations, rearranging simple formulae, substituting numbers into expressions, and expanding single and double brackets. Higher tier adds quadratics (factorising, completing the square, the quadratic formula), simultaneous equations (linear-linear and linear-quadratic), algebraic fractions and proof. Examiners reward students who set work out clearly and check by substitution.
Sequences are heavily examined. You need to find the nth term of a linear sequence, recognise quadratic sequences (and find the nth term using second differences), and work with geometric and Fibonacci sequences. Higher-tier nth-term-of-quadratic questions are high-value marks that strong students grab and weaker students skip.
Inequalities are examined algebraically and graphically. You should be able to solve linear inequalities (remembering to flip the sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative), represent solutions on a number line and shade regions on a graph for systems of inequalities. Higher-tier students also need quadratic inequalities.
Simultaneous equations are guaranteed marks. Linear-linear can always be done by elimination or substitution; linear-quadratic almost always wants substitution. Set out each step on its own line — examiners give method marks even for incorrect arithmetic.
