GCSE Maths: Statistics
Statistics rewards careful diagram reading. Most questions are about pulling data out of a graph or table accurately, applying a formula, and writing a short comparison in context.
Averages — mean, median, mode and range — must be calculated confidently from raw data, grouped frequency tables and discrete frequency tables. For grouped data, use the midpoint × frequency method for the estimated mean, and the modal class for the mode. Always state units in context.
Comparing two distributions is a near-certain question. Compare one measure of average (median or mean) and one measure of spread (range or interquartile range) using comparative language: 'higher on average', 'more spread out', 'less consistent'. Always link back to context — examiners reject answers without it.
Cumulative frequency, box plots and histograms (higher tier) come up regularly. Cumulative frequency curves give you the median and quartiles by drawing horizontal lines from the y-axis. Box plots summarise five numbers — minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, maximum — and are read for comparisons. Histograms use frequency density = frequency / class width.
Sampling — random, systematic, stratified — and bias are short but important sub-topics. Stratified sampling appears most often: number sampled from each group = (group size / total) × sample size.
Scatter graphs and correlation are easy marks. Draw a line of best fit by eye, classify correlation (positive/negative/none, strong/weak), and use the line of best fit for interpolation. Examiners reject extrapolation — always say if a prediction is outside the data range.
