GCSE Maths: Geometry

Geometry is one of the easiest topics to gain quick marks on — most questions follow a small number of patterns once you have memorised the key rules. The challenge is recognising which rule to apply.

Angle rules are foundational: angles on a straight line (180°), at a point (360°), in a triangle (180°), in a quadrilateral (360°), and the angles in regular polygons (interior = (n−2) × 180° / n). Parallel-line rules — alternate, co-interior, corresponding — are tested almost every paper, usually as a 'find the missing angle giving reasons' question. Always give the reason in words; method marks depend on it.

Circle theorems are higher-tier and look intimidating but boil down to 8 facts. Memorise each as a one-line statement (e.g. 'the angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference subtended by the same arc') and practise spotting them in diagrams. The hardest part is recognising the cyclic quadrilateral and the alternate segment theorem.

Similarity and congruence reward neat working. For congruent triangles, use the four conditions (SSS, SAS, ASA/AAS, RHS) and state which one applies. For similar shapes, set up the scale factor as a ratio of corresponding sides, then apply it to lengths, areas (square the scale factor) and volumes (cube it).

Pythagoras and trigonometry overlap with the trigonometry topic. The key geometry skill is recognising when a right-angled triangle is hiding inside a more complex shape (e.g. inside a cuboid or a circle).

Transformations (reflection, rotation, translation by vector, enlargement with positive, negative and fractional scale factors) are easy method marks. Always state the type of transformation and all the parameters (mirror line, centre and angle of rotation, vector, scale factor and centre).
