GCSE Maths: Ratio and Proportion
Ratio appears on almost every GCSE Maths paper, often as a 4- or 6-mark word problem. Most ratio questions reduce to two skills: dividing a quantity in a ratio, and finding 'one part' to scale up or down.
Sharing in a ratio is the most basic skill. Add the parts, divide the total by the total parts, then multiply by each ratio number. Higher-tier ratio questions often hide additional algebra (e.g. 'after Alice gives Bob £10, the ratio of their money becomes 3:2').
Direct proportion (y = kx) and inverse proportion (y = k/x) come up as equations and as graphs. Higher tier extends to y ∝ x², y ∝ √x, y ∝ 1/x², etc. Always find k from the given information first, then use the equation for the new value.
Recipes, best buys and unit pricing are classic foundation questions. Convert to 'per one unit' to compare, and remember to give a clear written conclusion.
Scale factors connect ratio with geometry and similar shapes. The scale factor of length is k; the scale factor of area is k²; the scale factor of volume is k³. Examiners give half marks for the right operation with the wrong factor, so always write what you are doing.
Currency conversion is straightforward but a common source of careless errors. Always set up the equation as '1 unit = … other units' before multiplying.
